"With SPICA, our ability to track lots in real time has been game changing.

Lab automation and instrument modernization had been a goal of mine since joining Herzog in 2013. The original lab equipment was standard wet chemistry style apparatus (Aeration Oxidation, Cash Still, Ripper method), and a small 4 cell spec to handle all enzymatic assays, which was cumbersome and inefficient during times of highest volume (i.e. harvest)Keeping up with standard quality checks would take a while for VA especially (cash stills).

After much research and talking to many people in the industry we settled on the SPICA auto analyzer.

The volume of wine we produce and in the myriad of styles we make (still, effervescent, dry, sweet, red, white, sterile, non-sterile, etc) kept growing in volume and complexityWe needed something that could keep up with all the parameters we were tracking.

The ability to run concurrent tests and lots, to batch test, and to have one instrument that could nearly “do it all,” and therefore save bench space and operator time, was highly desirableIn most cases, we have tripled the output on analysis; this has allowed us to spot problem lots and track them immediately, as well as track the efficacy of our problem remediationBecause we can check so many parameters simultaneously, we are able to manage cellar health much more proactively.

We went with SPICA for several reasons: Robust industry presence of the Y15 autoanalyzer, the fact that SPICA technicians have real world winemaking and wine lab experience, the ability to run to many different analysesCustomer service and support is attentive, prompt, and helpful.

We have been able to keep nearly 100% of analysis in house, thus saving money on the need to send to 3rd party labs. We may pursue TTB certification for our chemists specifically because we have the SPICAAdditionally, we are part of the CTS testing cycle, and have been part of the cycle before and after automationOur statistical standing has improved along with accuracy.

One of the main features we love is the ability to set dilutions in the analytical parametersWe make a great deal of sweet and off dry wines, and manual dilutions had become unwieldly at the level requiredThe ability to quantify glucose independently from fructose was very helpful during harvest 2023This was a cost savings as we did not have to send to an outside lab for this test when required."

"The Y15 is definitely the most important piece of equipment we have in our lab, it keeps us rolling during harvest and throughout the year.

We have used the Y15 for about 6 years. Pre-fermentation, we rely on it to check PAN and ammonia to calculate YAN. The Y15 makes fermentation tracking simple, consistent and accurate. We know exactly where we’re at, and that lets us make decisions confidently.

We use it for monthly acetic acid and free sulfite checks. We make a late harvest fortified wine and being able to dilute and measure sugar up to 150 g/L has been great. It's a huge help staying on top of RS.

Each morning, we collect our samples and once loaded in the Y15, it runs independently. We set it and forget it and go back out to the cellar so this helps us multitask. It is straightforward, after a couple hours of training, I trust a seasonal lab tech to run it confidently.

Admeo has great service. They’re always there to help us and are easy to work with.

Having used a few analyzers, I recommend the Y15."

"We originally were working with another enzymatic kit supplier and Admeo’s kits were more affordable with great accuracy and precision, and easy to follow instructions.

After working with Admeo’s acetic acid kit, it was an easy switch over to Admeo’s glucose fructose and malic acid kits.

Admeo has excellent customer service and support. They have very quick responses and are always friendly and eager to help us find solutions."

"Before purchasing the SPICA, we ran all the enzymatics manually, which is horrible since it takes such a long time. We would get results at 4pm on a very busy crush day, when the winemakers require the results around 1:00pm or 12:00pm. Sometimes we would have to re-run samples due to human error or pipetting issues. Therefore, occasionally it would be 5:00pm before we had acceptable results. 2023 crush was the highest tonnage we've ever harvested, with SPICA we had results by 11:00am or 12:00pm. The winemakers were very happy because they had all their results quickly, so they knew what the next production movements would be in a timely manner. That in turn got the work orders quicker to the cellar crew. So, the entire production team was helped by SPICA’s efficiency, accuracy and repeatability.

The winemakers are confident in SPICA’s numbers, especially when it pertains to enzymatics. Pre-SPICA there were two or three people manually performing enzymatics and we would get different results due to human error and practice. The SPICA has assured the winemakers that the results coming out of the lab are accurate and repeatable. We love its consistency and ease of use.

We save so much money on reagents. Prior to using SPICA, our acetic acid kits just for that one analyte were approximately $8500 a year. In comparison, we're spending maybe $8-9,000 for all reagents annually for SPICA

Admeo’s staff is one of the best I've ever worked with, they are so helpful and kind. The team is always available, there's always a fast response, whether it's via e-mail or a prompt phone response. Due to their efficient response time, there's never been a work stoppage issue. Since we are close to Admeo’s office in Napa, I can order supplies and they'll be here the next day without incurring express or expedited shipping. I appreciate that Admeo and BioSystems really listen to the customers by responding with continuous improvement on their products."

"For more than 10 years, I have said that Admeo is my favorite vendor. As a long-standing customer, I have had the pleasure of watching their company grow and develop while maintaining the same great level of support that has been provided since day one. Anytime we have questions or need support/service on our Admeo/Biosystems instrumentation, I have full confidence that answers will be provided in a timely manner. We receive the best customer service and support from Admeo and their team of professionals.

When the SPICA and Y25 came into our lab, the superiority of the well-made instrumentation was obvious. Although automation of the procedures is not new, what Biosystems and Admeo have brought to the table is a combination of solid manufacturing capabilities with stellar service and support of both instrumentation and reagents.

Prior to owning Biosystems/Admeo equipment, we were running enzymatic tests using manual or other automated analyzers. During those times, we would have longer workdays and slower output of our results. Once the Y25 (and now the SPICA) became part of the team, the frequent late nights have just about disappeared from the schedule. I ran several side-by-side comparisons and found the Y25 to be so much quicker on the larger runs it was an easy purchasing decision. Now we have both the Y25 and SPICA in house and are very fond of both instruments.

Admeo’s combination of instrumentation, reagents and service are all at the top level under one roof. I am not aware of any other company that provides all three pieces of the puzzle truly from one platform at such a high level!"
